IV. “The New Monastery”

Mepkin Abbey, Moncks Corner, South Carolina (October 24-29, 2018)

In our fourth dialogue-retreat we explored the problem of aging monastery populations. Facing the real possibility of losing our monasteries in the near future, and believing that they serve a vital role in the health of the human family—providing desperately needed spaces for retreat and contemplative transformation in an increasingly busy world—we asked: What might new models of new monastic life look like and what solutions are available to us? Convening an intimate group of traditional monastic abbots and abbesses with “new monastics” and other invested partners, we considered creative collaborative possibilities for transitioning to new, more sustainable monastery models that might “save our monasteries,” resulting in a blend of support for aging monastic populations and new possibilities for passing on the wisdom of monastic life and values to a new generation.
